Braaibroodjies


Cheese toasties cooked on the BBQ?! Who'd have thought ? What a great South African tradition!

Ingredients
makes 4
8 slices basic white bread
butter, enough for spreading
2 red onions, sliced, paper-thin
4 tomatoes, sliced paper-thin
8 tsp Mrs Balls Original chutney
250g grated cheddar cheese
salt
ground black pepper


Method

Bring the butter out of the fridge in plenty of time to soften. Then spread plenty of the butter on both sides of the sliced bread. 

Evenly spread a teaspoon of the chutney on each slice. 

Then add a layer of onion to each slice.  Season lightly with salt and pepper.

Top four slices with about 1/8th (30g) of grated cheese. Spread it out evenly.

Cover the cheese with sliced tomatoes. Season well with salt and pepper.

Then add another 30g of grated cheese on top of it all before covering with the other slices of bread to complete the sandwich.

Place them inside a BBQ grill-cage and slowly toast them over warm (not hot!) coals until golden brown.

Serve them immediately.

Or you can cook them in batches, removing them from the BBQ grill cage just before they reach the "golden brown" stage, then reheat them altogether directly on the grill at the end.
